Glutathione "The Master Antioxidant"

Jennifer Pehrson BSN, RN, CCRN

Glutathione is an amazing essential antioxidant known as the “master antioxidant” it is found inside the cells of plants and animals. It is a tri-peptide meaning it is composed of three different amino acids. The benefits of glutathione include neutralization of free radicals, transportation of mercury out of the cells and brain, regulation of cellular proliferation, cell apoptosis and proper mitochondrial function (mitochondria are the power house of cells important for ATP production) as well as assisting in the regeneration of vitamin C and E inside the body. So simply put glutathione helps protect the body from toxins, maintain health, increase energy and promote longevity. It has all the key components for becoming a potential “fountain of youth”.

Unfortunately, glutathione levels deplete as we age due to age associated cellular decline which typically begins in our 40’s and rapidly accelerates in our 60’s. Levels can also be low due to lifestyle choices such as alcohol consumption (alcohol is after all a toxin), toxin/oxidant exposure and dietary choices.

Research has been done and continues to take place on the benefits of adequate glutathione and its role in reducing the progression of cancerous cell growth, ulcerative colitis symptoms, Parkinson’s disease symptom management and event diabetes. Through its ability to maintain healthy cellular function, glutathione shows promising evidence in preventing many other diseases that affect the human body.

Glutathione can be taken orally, intranasal, intravenously and intramuscularly. At Speciality Dripps we administer glutathione intravenously with your IV drip or we can do a quick IM injection. IV and IM routes offer great efficacy and high absorption. Since glutathione is a naturally occurring tripeptide found in all cells in the body, the risk of negative side effects are almost non existent with supplementation.

One last fun fact, meditation practitioners have 20% higher levels of glutathione. If you are looking for a great way to boost your health and immunity and don’t have time for daily meditation and strict diets, give glutathione supplementation a try!
